A 13-year-old girl riding her bicycle was killed when she was struck by a bus in Redondo Beach.

The crash police described as a “tragic accident” occurred around 5:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Knob Hill Avenue, the Redondo Beach Police Department reported.

The girl was riding her bicycle with a friend when, for an unknown reason, she traveled into the roadway on Pacific Coast Highway and was struck by the bus, Redondo Beach police Lt. Shawn Freeman told reporters at the scene.

The girl’s friend was not hurt.

Witnesses at the scene said the girl was a student at Parras Middle School in Redondo Beach.

The area was closed for a little more than five hours.
