Three boaters were safe Sunday after a terrifying afternoon on the rough, wind-driven ocean waters off Santa Monica State Beach when they had be rescued when their catamaran capsized.
A helicopter and three rescue vessels were dispatched to the scene at 4:51 p.m. Saturday, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.
The three were rescued at 5:25 p.m. , the dispatcher said.
One of the rescued individuals was taken aboard a private vessel and two were aboard a Los Angeles County Lifeguards boat.
None of the people required hospitalization, the dispatcher said. It wasn’t known if any of the three were plucked from the cold water or if they had remained clinging to the overturned boat before they were rescued.
Southern California had been hit all weekend by winds and cooler weather, and a high surf advisory was in effect when the boat capsized. But the exact reason for the boat to capsize wasn’t provided by authorities.
A catamaran is a double-hulled sail boat that usually has no extended keel that can help avoid capsizing.
It wasn’t known what happened to the boar, nor were any details provided about the vessel or the victims.
