An unknown number of customers are without water service Sunday as utility crews try to stop the flow of water coming from a busted 24-inch water main in South Los Angeles.
It occurred about 3:30 a.m. in the area of Manchester Avenue and Hoover Street, Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Terry Schneider said.
It was not immediately known what caused the water main to break, Schneider said, but as of 8:30 a.m. the water continued to rush down Manchester for at least a quarter mile.
DWP crews are working to shut off the valves to the main. The utility’s Mike Avila told KCAL9 that shutting off the main has to be a careful process to avoid causing more damage to the surrounding area. He estimated that it would take about 190 turns to stop the water flow.
The broken pipe was built in the 1920s, KCAL9 reported.
Update at 1:32 p.m. July 23, 2017: Water restoration is expected by 5 p.m., Department of Water and Power
spokeswoman Terry Schneider said. Sixteen customers remain without water.
