One of Palm Springs’ busiest restaurants and bars was shut down Wednesday due to a fire that also damaged three other businesses and a pickup truck.

Flames broke out a few hours after TRIO closed for the night in an “historic building” in the Uptown Arts District in the 700 block of North Palm Canyon a few blocks from downtown Palm Springs. TRIO’s bar and dining room are usually crowded during the dinner hour, and even outside tables are often filled despite triple-digit summer temperatures.

But nobody was hurt as the blaze was reported at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday.

There was no immediate word of a cause of the fire.

An online posting by the owners of TRIO said the eatery was closed Wednesday due to the damage, but would “be opening again very soon!” The restaurant, according to its website, serves “Midwest comfort food with a California contemporary edge.”

According to Battalion Chief Jason Loya, crews from the Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Riverside County fire departments were able to extinguish the flames before the fire could spread throughout the strip mall.

The truck and the back of the building were burned, while two businesses sustained smoke damage and two others had fire and water damage, Loya said.
