An armed suspect was killed in a deputy-involved shooting near Nickerson Gardens in Watts, authorities said Thursday.

No deputies were injured in the shooting, which was reported about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Imperial Highway and Slater Street, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Deputies were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on Slater Street, facing the wrong way, Schrader said.

The vehicle was occupied by the driver and a man was standing outside of it. When the deputies approached, the man standing outside the vehicle ran east through a driveway and onto northbound Imperial Highway, armed with a handgun, Schrader said.

The deputies pursued the suspect as he ran into the Nickerson Gardens housing development and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Authorities didn’t say what prompted deputies to fire on the man.

The suspect, described as being in his 30s, was struck at least one time. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Schrader said.

A handgun believed to belong to the suspect was found at the scene, she said.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered at the scene Wednesday night following the shooting, a news photographer reported from the scene. No arrests were immediately reported.
