A 47-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a three-vehicle crash on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway, near the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.
The crash on the southbound freeway, north of Whittier Boulevard, occurred about 3:20 p.m. Saturday, the CHP reported.
The motorcyclist, riding a 2014 Yamaha, was in the No. 3 lane approaching the rear of a 2014 Nissan, and was passing the vehicle when the front of the bike struck the car.
The Yamaha then veered to the right and struck the left side of a semi-truck’s trailer. The impact caused the rider and motorcycle to slide under the semi-truck’s trailer — and the trailer’s left rear tires ran over the motorcyclist.
The victim, a resident of Tehachapi, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan stayed at the scene and the motorist in the semi-truck fled kept going southbound on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway.
The CHP’s Central Los Angeles office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (213) 744-2331.
