Authorities Wednesday identified a Pasadena man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting at a park in Duarte.

The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of Encanto Parkway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Matthew Hurtado, 28, died at a hospital, according to the coroner’s office.

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau Lt. Joe Mendoza told reporters that Hurtado was wanted in a shooting the previous night at a birthday party in Pasadena that left a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl wounded.

At the time of the officer-involved shooting, Hurtado was inside a vehicle in a parking lot at Encanto Park, along with a 36-year-old woman, who was wounded but survived.

“Detectives have learned the U.S. Marshals Task Force, which included Pasadena Police Department, Glendale Police Department and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation personnel, were actively searching for the suspect,” said Deputy Joana Warren of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Warren said Hurtado was “on parole and considered armed and dangerous.”

Four officers were involved in the shooting. One officer was from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, two were from the Pasadena Police Department and one was from Glendale Police Department, Warren said.

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives were assisting Pasadena police in the shooting investigation.
