Authorities Monday identified a man who was killed when the car in which he was riding became disabled on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Diamond Bar and a pickup truck slammed into it.

The crash occurred about 3:05 a.m. Sunday on the eastbound freeway near Diamond Bar Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Abraham Franco, 29, of Pomona, died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

According to the CHP, Franco was riding in a 2001 Chevrolet Impala that was disabled in the carpool lane of the freeway “due to a prior traffic collision.”

Meanwhile, a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado was being driven eastbound on the freeway in the same lane by 32-year-old John Swick of Hesperia, according to the CHP.

“Due to (Swick) driving at an unsafe speed for the existing traffic conditions, the front of the Chevrolet Silverado collided into the left rear of the Chevrolet Impala,” according to the CHP.

The Impala overturned, and three occupants were ejected: Abraham Franco; the driver, 30-year-old Melissa Murga of Pomona; and a year-old girl named Abby Franco, CHP officials said.

Murga and Abby Franco suffered major injuries and two other passengers in the Impala suffered minor injuries, the CHP reported.

Swick suffered minor injuries. His passenger, 31-year-old Ashley Stevens of Hesperia, suffered major injuries, officials said. Neither motorist was arrested, according to the CHP.

According to a CHP officer, a person was taken into custody after running from the crash scene. It was unclear if that person was involved in the “prior traffic collision” that had left the Impala disabled.
