A 27-year-old man is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on a charge of capital murder for the Thanksgiving ambush slaying of a Rosemead man gunned down in his driveway as he returned home.

Zhongqiang Meng, 27, of Rosemead, is scheduled to be arraigned at the Pomona courthouse in connection with last Thursday’s killing of Carlos Sanchez. The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation of murder by means of lying in wait, along with an allegation that Meng personally and intentionally discharged a .40-caliber handgun.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Meng.

Sanchez, 50, was shot in his driveway in the 8000 block of Emerson Place last Thursday and died at the scene.

Meng turned himself in to officers at the Monterey Park Police Department on Friday morning and remains jailed.

Sanchez worked at an auto body shop.

“There was unhappiness on the part of the suspect (over) the proximity of the business and the effect on his family,” sheriff’s Detective Derrick Alfred told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. “It’s my understanding the victim had purchased a dog from the suspect in the past. He paid all but a small amount.”

Meng has remained in jail since his arrest last week.
