The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Sunday was looking for three men who broke into the Eastvale home of an off-duty Pomona police officer and fled when the officer shot at one of the suspected burglars.

The burglary occurred at 1:37 p.m. Saturday in the 6400 block of Caxton Street, according to Sgt. Ben Ramirez.

The off-duty officer and another resident were inside their home when they heard multiple people forcing their way into the building, Ramirez said.

“The off-duty officer armed himself and confronted two suspects in an upstairs room,” he said.

According to Ramirez, the off-duty officer, who was not identified, feared for his life and shot at one of the suspected burglars, though it was not clear if anyone was wounded.

The suspects then fled from the home, and when deputies arrived at the scene, they canvassed the surrounding neighborhood, but did not make any arrests, Ramirez said.

Witnesses described the suspects to investigators as three black men ranging in age from 18 to 28 years old, and their getaway vehicle as a gray Hyundai.

Authorities urged anyone with information about the burglary or suspects to contact Investigator Martinez at the Jurupa Valley Station at (951) 955-2600, or Investigator Bishop at the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955- 2777.
