A man remained hospitalized Tuesday with a chest wound that he appears to have inflicted himself after he shot his ex-wife to death in Bellflower, authorities said.

The shootings occurred about 3:15 p.m. Monday in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Responding deputies found the woman shot once in the chest and she was pronounced dead at the scene, Deputy Charles Moore said. The woman’s name was withheld pending family notification.

They also found the man with one gunshot wound to the chest, which appeared to be self-inflicted. He was taken to a hospital by paramedics and his current condition was not available.

The initial investigation revealed the two people were divorced, Moore said. Detectives also learned the former husband contacted the woman at her residence and during that visit, he shot her with a handgun and then turned the gun on himself. It’s not clear what precipitated the shootings.

The couple had two children — a 6 year-old son and a 8 year-old daughter who were at the shooting scene but not physically hurt.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the shooting to call (323) 890-5500 or, to submit an anonymous tip, (800) 222-8477.
