Authorities Wednesday identified a man who died while in custody at the jail in police headquarters in Montebello.

George Heredia, 59, believed to have been a transient, died shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the facility at 1600 West Beverly Blvd, according to the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s department. An autopsy was pending.

Heredia was arrested on Monday night by Montebello police on a no-bail felony warrant, and was awaiting transportation to a court appearance when he was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s department reported.

“There were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play,” a sheriff’s statement said.

Sheriff’s detectives were assisting Montebello police in the investigation. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
