A gunman who allegedly fired shots at police when officers arrived in a South Los Angeles neighborhood where a male had been wounded was taken into custody Thursday morning after an hours-long standoff that included the use of teargas by police.
The shooting call came out at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of Third Avenue, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Media Relations Section. When officers arrived, they were fired upon, but none were injured, Im said.
The wounded victim was taken to a hospital. His age and condition were not immediately available.
Officers cordoned off the area and mounted a search for the shooter, Im said. The search prompted evacuations of nearby homes, according to reports from the scene.
Officers fired multiple round of tear gas around 4:30 a.m. in the area of the shooting, where the suspect was believed to be hiding, according to reports from the scene. The suspect was later wheeled out on a stretcher, though he appeared conscious and talking.
