An apparently unarmed suspect who was shot by an Anaheim police officer following a pursuit that ended in Irvine remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday.
Kenneth John Yamashita-Magarro, 24, was shot around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday at an intersection near the San Diego (405) Freeway and the Jamboree Road exit.
According to Irvine police, Yamashita-Magarro was allegedly driving erratically and at speeds topping 100 mph on the 405 Freeway in Anaheim around 10 p.m. He was being tracked by Anaheim police officers in a helicopter, and before ground units could arrive at the scene, Yamashita-Magarro crashed on the freeway near Jamboree, police said.
The suspect fled from his vehicle and was found a short time later near Von Karman and Quartz, where he was shot by Anaheim police, according to the Irvine Police Department. Officers from Irvine and Fountain Valley were also on the scene at the time.
According to Irvine police, no weapons were found at the scene of the shooting. It’s unclear what prompted the gunfire.
Irvine police said Yamashita-Magarro is on probation and had two outstanding no-bail felony warrants out for his arrest for alleged drug-related crimes.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
