An officer-involved shooting in Anaheim Friday left a suspect in his 20s wanted in a domestic disturbance critically wounded, police said.
The shooting was reported around 7:10 a.m. in the 100 block of South Seneca Circle, according to the Anaheim Police Department. Officers who had gone to the neighborhood on an unrelated investigation recognized 24-year-old Petrica Peter Muntean from a call they received Thursday night regarding a domestic disturbance, said Sgt. Daron Wyatt.
Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a disturbance between a woman and her adult son in the area of Lombard Drive and Brewster Avenue, Wyatt said. Officers saw Muntean flee on foot then stop about 25 to 30 yards away and place a handgun under his chin, Wyatt said.
Officers took cover and ordered Muntean to stop, but he ran away and eluded officers during a perimeter search, police said.
When officers contacted Muntean Friday morning, he “exhibited similar behavior to the incident the prior evening,” Wyatt said.
Officers followed Muntean, gave him verbal commands to stop and utilized less than lethal munitions in an attempt to detain him, but Muntean continued to the 100 block of Seneca Circle, where an officer-involved shooting occurred, Wyatt said.
Muntean was struck by the gunfire and taken to a trauma center where he remains in critical condition, Wyatt said.
The officers involved were equipped with body worn cameras and the cameras were activated at the time of the shooting, according to Wyatt. A BB gun that resembled a firearm was recovered at the scene, he said.
No officers were injured.
