A candlelight vigil will be held this evening for a teen who was shot and killed Saturday in a residential neighborhood in Menifee.
The victim, Devaughn Perkins of Menifee, was a graduate from Murrieta Mesa High School and just completed his first year as a business major at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he maintained a 3.4 grade-point average and stayed out of trouble, according to family members and friends talking to reporters.
The 18-year-old was found shot and unresponsive in the early morning hours Saturday near the intersection of Cleary Street and Michener Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
“Officers performed life-saving measures, but the victim died from injuries sustained from the shooting,” sheriff’s officials said.
Initial reports indicated that the shooting might have occurred outside of a large house party.
Sheriff’s officials said the suspect was still outstanding and that an investigation was underway. Family and friends of the victim said they hoped the person responsible decides to come forward.
Authorities asked that anyone with information about the shooting call Detective Stoyer with the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777 or Detective Salisbury at (951) 210-1000.
A public candlelight vigil for the teenage victim was planned for 7 p.m. at The View Church, 26701 McCall Blvd. in Sun City.
Perkins’ family has set up a GoFundMe page to help collect donations to cover funeral expenses at www.gofundme.com/funds-for-devaughn-funeral-cost.
