A man accused of gunning down a 20-year-old Perris resident during a robbery in a shopping center parking lot pleaded not guilty Thursday to murder and other offenses.

Tyler Nathaniel Washington, 20, was arrested last month following a six-week investigation by Riverside County sheriff’s homicide detectives.

Along with the murder count, Washington is charged with robbery and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.

He was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Emma Smith, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for July 17 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

Washington is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Ben Ramirez, the defendant was identified as one of the alleged gunmen who attacked Anthony Young after investigators posted information regarding the shooting to social media, generating “numerous tips.”

Young was gunned down about 7 p.m. on April 8 in the 2000 block of North Perris Boulevard, near Citrus Avenue.

Detectives were able to procure security surveillance video camera images showing the two assailants before, during and after the deadly attack.

Video recorded the men stopping in the shopping center parking lot where Young was standing and confronting him. The victim was shot in the upper body, after which the duo fled in a silver 1998-2000 four-door Lexus GS300 with tinted windows and a sunroof.

Young was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he died a short time later.

Washington’s alleged cohort in the attack was black, of medium height, thin and wearing a blue zip-up hooded sweatshirt with white stripes, as well as dark-colored jeans, a black do-rag over his head and beige or off-white sneakers, investigators said.

Ramirez said investigators are still looking for the man, and anyone with information was asked to call the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.

Washington has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
