A man suspected of attacking a woman unloading groceries in her driveway in Brea barricaded himself in a neighbor’s home Friday for hours before surrendering.

The attack happened about 10:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Hodson Avenue, Brea police Lt. Adam Hawley said.

As the woman unloaded the groceries, the suspect began pummeling her for no apparent reason and at one point picked up a metal pipe and slammed it over her, Hawley said. The victim’s shouts for help drew other family members, including one relative who began wrestling with the suspect, Hawley said.

The suspect threatened to shoot the victims, but he did not show a weapon, Hawley said. The suspect dashed into a nearby home and holed up inside, Hawley said.

Hours later, SWAT officers were able to make contact with the suspect and he came out and surrendered, Hawley said.

SWAT officers were working to clear the residence to see if anyone else was inside as of 2:30 p.m., according to Hawley.

The suspect appeared to have some association with the owner of the home in which he barricaded himself, but it wasn’t immediately clear if he is a friend or a roommate or some other type of acquaintance, Hawley said.

The woman who initially was attacked was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, Hawley said.
