California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials are looking for a 31-year-old man doing time for vehicle theft who walked away from the Male Community Reentry Program in Long Beach Thursday afternoon, prompting an emergency search.
Officials were notified about 4 p.m. that Jose Chavez had tampered with an electronic monitoring device, according to Krissi Khokhobashvili of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
“Chavez had been out on an approved day pass, and his last known location was Obregon Park in East Los Angeles,” Khokhobashvili said.
The park is in the 4000 block of East First Street.
Chavez was serving a two-year, eight-month sentence and had been admitted in April to the reentry program, which helps ease some inmates’ way back into the community toward the end of their sentences. He was due for release in February, Khokhobashvili said.
Chavez is Hispanic, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 221 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts was urged to call local law enforcement or 911.
