An SUV driver who failed to stop for a red light Thursday near downtown Corona slammed into a compact sedan, killing the driver, police said.
The collision occurred about 11:15 a.m. at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Santana Way, just west of Santana Regional Park, according to the Corona Police Department.
A man driving a Jeep Cherokee was going north on Magnolia Avenue when he failed to see traffic ahead of him stopped for a red light at Santana Way, Detective Jason Waldon said
A man driving a Honda Accord was waiting in the left-turn pocket, preparing to head into the shopping center on the west side of the roadway when the SUV plowed into the back of his vehicle, according to Waldon.
The sedan was pushed into the intersection and hit a Volkswagen Jetta, Waldon said.
Witnesses ran to the Honda driver’s aid and found him unconscious and gravely injured, prompting them to begin CPR.
Paramedics arrived within five minutes and took over life-saving treatment, according to reports from the scene.
The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Corona Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries a short time later, according to Waldon.
The Jeep driver, also not identified, was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. The Volkswagen driver was not hurt.
Alcohol or drugs have not been ruled out as possible factors in the collision, which remains under investigation, Waldon said.
