Street racing was blamed for a deadly crash on the westbound Moreno Valley (60) Freeway in Moreno Valley, it was reported Saturday.

“During the investigation we determined this was a speed contest,” Sgt. Eugene Norris of the California Highway Patrol told NBC4.

Four people were killed and a fifth was seriously injured in the two-vehicle crash. Two victims were ejected and three were trapped in the wreckage of the crash, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. Friday west of Redlands Boulevard, according to Tawny Cabral of the Riverside County Fire Department.

“Four of the victims perished at the scene and one victim suffered serious injuries,” Cabral said.

“We’re looking for a 2017, 2018 Honda Civic, gray or black,” Norris said. “We’re also looking for a black Mazda hatchback.”

Norris said anyone who saw the collision or the speed contest taking place should call the Riverside CHP office.

Traffic was halted in both directions following the crash and a SigAlert was issued, according to the CHP.

The names and ages of the victims were not disclosed.
