Authorities Thursday identified a tow truck driver who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the eastbound 91 Freeway in Carson.
Carlos Dubon-Ventura, 33, of San Fernando died at the scene of the crash about 11:55 p.m. Tuesday west of Central Avenue, according to coroner’s officials and the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, a Mercedes-Benz sedan was stopped with a flat tire along the right shoulder of the freeway, and Dubon-Ventura was attending to the car.
A silver or gray 2012 or later Honda Pilot or Acura MDX drifted onto the shoulder and struck Dubon-Ventura, the CHP reported.
The impact of the collision killed the man, leaving his body in the No. 4 lane of traffic until emergency personnel arrived to secure the scene, according to the CHP, which reported that a 1-year-old child who had been removed from the Mercedes and placed in the tow truck was showered by shattered glass as a result of the collision.
The girl was taken to a hospital but suffered only minimal injuries and was released soon after arrival, according to CHP Officer Lance Nieves.
A SigAlert was issued about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, and all eastbound lanes were closed until about 4 a.m., the CHP reported.
No description of the SUV driver has been made available.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the South L.A. CHP Area office at (310) 516-3355.
