A man in his mid-30s was in critical condition with at least two gunshot wounds, after he pulled out a fixed-blade knife and allegedly pointed it at lawmen Sunday in Compton.
No deputies were injured during the shooting, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau reported. A knife was recovered at the scene, but no gun other than the deputies’ weapons.
A deputy on patrol about 6:50 a.m. spotted a 2018 van parked on the northeast corner of Pine Street and Long Beach Boulevard, ran the plates and discovered that the vehicle was stolen.
The deputy requested back up. Once back up arrived they tried to detain the lone person inside the van.
As they were attempting to detain the suspect, he allegedly pulled out a two-to-three inch fixed blade knife and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
The suspect suffered at least two gunshot wounds to the upper torso and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.
Following normal department procedure, deputies would not say if the suspect was intentionally shot by their colleagues. But the man in the van did not have a gun, deputies said.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at (323) 890-5500.
