A probationer accused of assaulting Palm Springs police officers and a police K9 during an arrest at his home pleaded not guilty Friday to felony and misdemeanor charges.

Brian Barker, 45, of Palm Springs, allegedly tried to fight off several officers who arrested him outside his home on Sept. 6.

As an officer attempted to pull Barker over for a traffic violation, Barker allegedly pulled into his driveway, then “battered police officers and police K9” as they tried to arrest him, according to an arrest warrant declaration.

While none of the officers were injured, PSPD K9 Max sustained minor injuries in the tussle, according to Palm Springs police, who said “several non-lethal force options” were used to subdue Barker, including the K9 and “a less lethal impact weapon.”

A subsequent search of his residence and car turned up ammunition, which he is prohibited from owning, per his probation terms.

Prosecutors charged him last week with felony counts of willfully injuring a police dog, resisting arrest and possession of ammunition.

Barker is due back in court Nov. 6 for a felony settlement conference.
