A 17-year-old boy who allegedly snatched a gun from a parked vehicle in Lake Elsinore was arrested Saturday.
The theft was reported at 7:05 a.m. in the 3000 block of Ulla Lane, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s officials said the suspect stole the gun from an unlocked vehicle after the driver had parked in a driveway and entered his home momentarily.
When the driver came back outside, he allegedly found the suspect rifling through his vehicle, and called a sheriff’s dispatcher.
The driver then attempted to unsuccessfully chase the suspect in his vehicle as he ran away.
Deputies arrived and searched the area and eventually found the stolen gun by the garage of a home near the scene of the theft, the department said.
The teenage suspect, a Lake Elsinore resident, surrendered after hearing deputies threaten to deploy a police dog and was arrested.
Deputies found other loaded firearm magazines, prescription drugs, and miscellaneous paperwork and property taken from the vehicle on the suspect.
He was booked into the Riverside County Southwest Juvenile Hall.
