An investigation was underway Friday into a deputy-involved shooting in Industry that left a suspect wounded.
An update on the man’s condition was not available, but so far, he has survived the shooting, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A deputy was inside a 7-Eleven store about 3:20 a.m. Thursday in the 2600 block of Pellissier Place when he heard a crash, went outside and saw a black sedan had smashed into a parked vehicle, according to Lt. Scott Hoglund of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
The deputy saw a woman exit the vehicle and begin running away in an apparent attempt to flee from the driver, who gave chase, Hoglund said.
The suspect changed course and approached the driver’s door of the deputy’s parked black-and-white SUV, Hoglund said.
“The deputy believed that the suspect might have been trying to get into the car or steal the car,” Hoglund said. “At that point, they made contact with each other (and) a physical altercation occurred during which time the suspect grabbed hold of the deputy’s gun and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was struck at least once. He then ran into the 7-Eleven and into a rear storage room where he held a female employee hostage, Hoglund said.
“The deputy and assisting deputies went inside the store, started a conversation with the suspect and the hostage,” the lieutenant said. “After an unknown duration of time, the suspect — it’s my understanding — released the … hostage, and the deputies took the suspect into custody without further incident.”
The suspect, who name has not been released, was taken to a hospital, Hoglund said.
There were no reported injuries to deputies.
