A 58-year-old postal worker was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday morning in Commerce.
The victim was standing outside a U.S. Postal Service truck about 10 a.m. in the 2100 block of South Atlantic Boulevard when a car struck him, causing fatal injuries, according to Lt. Rick Mejia of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s East Los Angeles Station.
After hitting the postal worker, the car slammed into the postal truck and then struck and came to rest against the wall of a nearby business, Mejia said.
The victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.
One person in the building sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital, Mejia said.
The car’s driver stopped and passed a field sobriety test. He also had blood drawn and test results were pending, but there was no immediate indication the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and he was later released, Mejia said.
The dead man’s family identified him in a gofundme appeal as 30-year postal service veteran Joel Perales, a husband and grandfather.
