A low pressure system in eastern California and Santa Ana winds are forecast to bring unseasonably cold temperatures and gusty winds to the Los Angeles area, a meteorologist said Saturday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday for the San Fernando Valley and night-time temperatures in the Antelope Valley could drop into the teens next week, NWS Meteorologist Keily Delerme said. High temperatures through New Year’s Day will be in the low to mid-60s. Normal is upper 60s during the day.
The cooler temperatures will be caused in part by low pressure over eastern California which is sending a cold air mass to the west because it is turning counter-clockwise, Delerme said.
The other culprit is medium to strong Santa Ana winds expected to put a chill on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day events, including the Rose Parade, she said.
Monday and Tuesday’s mountain winds are forecast to be 30 to 45 mph with 65 mph gusts, Delerme said.
Coastal areas and Valleys will see 20-35 mph winds with gusts to 55 mph, she said.
The wind chill could make camping out for the Rose Parade in Pasadena an uncomfortable experience, Delerme said. The Monday temperatures will range from a low of 45 degrees to a high of 62 and the low will drop early Tuesday to around 40 degrees which will feel like the low 30s with the wind chill factor, she said.
Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour could also affect floats in the parade, Delerme said.
The Santa Ana winds could strip moisture from the air leading to humidity of less than 20 percent, she said. “That could be a fire concern” if any fires start, Delerme said. No warnings have been issued, but it is a concern.
