A convicted felon accused of shooting a Riverside man and later turning combative with patrol officers as they were detaining him pleaded not guilty Thursday to attempted murder and other offenses.
Daniel Ramos Calderon, 24, was arrested last month following a confrontation with police in the area of Main and Russell streets.
Along with the attempted murder count, Calderon is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a loaded gun, resisting arrest and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
He was arraigned before Riverside County Superior Court Judge David Gunn, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Feb. 20 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
The probationer is being on $1 million bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
According to Riverside police, Calderon allegedly opened fire on a man during an undisclosed dispute in the 1700 block of Enterprise Drive about 10 p.m. on Jan. 25.
The victim — whose identity was not released — was wounded in his upper body and underwent surgery. He’s now recovering, according to investigators.
Calderon was quickly identified as the alleged assailant, and officers began searching for his vehicle, spotted three nights later at a gas station, police said.
Two patrolmen approached the vehicle and “noticed a handgun between the suspect’s legs,” according to a police department statement.
“One of the officers grabbed the firearm, and the suspect began to struggle with them,” the agency stated. “A Taser was deployed, which subdued the suspect, who was then taken into custody.”
Neither officer was injured. Calderon suffered minor abrasions during the struggle, but he did not require medical treatment.
According to court records, he has prior convictions for domestic abuse, theft and making criminal threats.
