A man and woman were arrested Wednesday for allegedly attempting to burglarize a home in Claremont, their escape thwarted because the keys to their getaway car were locked inside the vehicle.
Officers responded about 11:30 a.m. to the 700 block of Via Santa Catarina to investigate a report of a residential burglary in progress.
“The homeowner saw a female suspect inside his secured backyard looking into windows,” Claremont police Lt. Karlan Bennett said. “While looking into one of the windows, the suspect saw the homeowner and fled on foot towards Mountain Avenue and towards a white 2018 Hyundai Sonata.”
A man was waiting near the vehicle, but was unable to leave because the keys were locked inside, Bennett said.
Officers arrived and detained the suspects, later identified as 44-year-old Christopher Gutierrez of Los Angeles and 28-year-old Cecilia Garcia of Baldwin Park.
Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, conspiracy and being under the influence of a controlled substance, Bennett said.
Garcia also had an outstanding arrest warrant, Bennett said.
