A 21-year-old man accused of robbing and attempting to sexually assault an employee at a Moreno Valley business was arrested and remained jailed Saturday in lieu of $1 million bail.

Nathanael Colbert-Chaves of Moreno Valley was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of kidnapping with the intent to commit rape and sexual assault, second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and attempted rape, officials said.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies received a call at 8:15 a.m. Thursday reporting an assault at a store in the 24000 block of Sunnymead Boulevard, according to Investigator Gabriel Gil.

When deputies arrived, the 61-year-old victim said a man who had walked into the store and asked if they were hiring attacked her and forced her into a back room where he attempted to sexually assault her as she fought back, Gil said.

“After the struggle with the victim, Colbert-Chaves aborted his sexual assault and took the victim’s purse and phone as he left the store. Colbert-Chaves then used the victim’s credit cards at two locations in Moreno Valley,” he said.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, though the severity of her injuries was not disclosed.

Authorities were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle using the citywide surveillance camera system, and the car was later found parked outside a home in the 12000 block of Cobblestone Lane, officials said.

Deputies served a search warrant at the residence, where they arrested Colbert-Chaves and found evidence of the crime inside his bedroom, according to Gil.
