A 34-year-old man was released from jail Friday following an early morning arrest for allegedly failing to stop at a red light, smashing into another vehicle at an intersection and then fleeing on foot from the scene while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.
Vincent William Jaso, a Lake Elsinore resident, was arrested at 3 a.m. at Auto Center Drive and Diamond Drive on suspicion of a hit and run with property damage and driving under the influence, jail records show.
Around 1:25 a.m., Lake Elsinore police responded to the area of Diamond Drive and Interstate 15 in reference to a traffic collision, according to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
“Officers arrived within minutes and were told a vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Diamond Drive, failed to stop for the red light at the southbound offramp intersection, and collided with another vehicle,” police said. “The driver fled on foot westbound on Diamond Drive and northbound onto Auto Center Drive.”
Jaso was found running northbound toward the auto dealerships on Auto Center Drive, police said. Officers apprehended Jaso, who they say appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, following a brief chase.
Jaso had injuries consistent with a traffic collision, police said. The people in the vehicle that Jaso allegedly hit were not injured.
He was released from the Southwest Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bail, jail records show. A May 15 court date was set for Jaso at the Murrieta Southwest Justice Center.
