A couple wanted in connection with the killing of a man in Mesa, Arizona were in custody Friday in Los Angeles County after being arrested in Redondo Beach.
On Monday, a Hermosa Beach police officer noticed a 13-year-old boy who was walking a dog and appeared sad.
The officer stopped to ask the child if he was OK “and ultimately learned that his mother and stepfather were implicated in the murder of his uncle in Mesa, Arizona,” according to Hermosa Beach Police Department Sgt. Mick Gaglia.
“The Mesa Police Department was contacted and they confirmed a homicide occurred in their city and the boy’s mom and stepfather were listed as suspects,” Gaglia said.
Working with investigators from Arizona, detectives learned the suspects — identified as Ryan Scott Nuckoles, 34, and Laura Lee Nuckoles, 36, both of Mesa, Arizona — were likely still in the South Bay area. A bulletin was issued and Redondo Beach police officers located them a few hours later and placed them under arrest.
The child was taken into the custody of the county Department of Children and Family Services and later reunited with family members, Gaglia said.
Officials told The Arizona Republic that the boy’s uncle Robert Nuckoles, 36, who is Ryan Nuckoles’ brother, was found dead Saturday at the couple’s apartment.
Ryan and Laura Nuckoles are facing possible charges of first-degree murder, according to The Republic.
Both suspects were being held without bail, Ryan Nuckoles at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles and Laura Nuckoles at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.
