Long Beach police Thursday were investigating the shooting deaths of two men, one of whom died at a hospital in Gardena after being dropped off by someone in a private vehicle, who was being sought.
Officers went to the 5500 block of Atlantic Avenue about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday “regarding a person with a gun call.” They came upon one of the victims with gunshot wounds to his upper body and began performing life-saving measures, but Kevin Williams, 32, of Lynwood died at the scene.
“During their preliminary investigation, detectives learned a second victim with gunshot wounds to his upper torso was transported by a private vehicle to a hospital in the city of Gardena, where he later succumbed to his injuries,” according to a Long Beach police statement. “The second victim is only being identified as a 29-year-old male from the state of Mississippi, pending notification of next of kin.”
Police said the “relationship between the two victims is still under investigation. Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances and interviewing witnesses to learn how the victims sustained their injuries and a possible motive for the shootings.”
Gardena police officers went to Memorial Hospital of Gardena about 5 p.m. Wednesday to investigate the death of the man, who was dropped off by someone who drove away. Gardena police said then that investigators were looking for a blue Nissan Rouge SUV with North Carolina license plate FML-4184.
“Detectives are aware of the vehicle,” Long Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez told City News Service on Thursday afternoon. “However at this time we are not able to confirm the vehicle’s involvement as that is part of the ongoing investigation.”
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call LBPD homicide detectives at 562-570-7244, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
