A woman found Thursday in downtown Long Beach with a gunshot wound to her upper body died at a hospital and the investigation led to a nearby home that was surrounded by a SWAT team.

Paramedics responded just before 8 a.m. to the 300 block of Magnolia Avenue — near the courthouse building and a Long Beach police station — and took the victim to a hospital, where she died, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The woman’s age and name were not immediately available and a possible motive for the killing was not disclosed.

A man seen leaving the area on foot was described as a possible suspect, police said.

Evidence led investigators to a home in the 300 block of Daisy Avenue, where officers served a search warrant and a SWAT team was subsequently called in, Long Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy said.

Nearby homes were evacuated and others in the area were urged to stay inside, Dandoy said.

Loud bangs were heard coming from the home about 5:50 p.m., according to a report from the scene.

Magnolia Avenue was also closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Third and Fourth Streets, Dandoy said.
