Authorities Monday identified a bicyclist who was struck by two vehicles and killed in Long Beach.
Mike Yanis, 59, who was homeless, died at the scene of his injury, which occurred about 6:20 a.m. Thursday on Redondo Avenue at 11th Street, according to the coroner’s office and the Long Beach Police Department said.
Officers found Yanis lying in the No. 1 northbound lane of Redondo Avenue and two stopped vehicles — a 2008 Honda Civic in the No. 1 northbound lane just north of the victim, and a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox in the southbound No. 1 lane, police said.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that a female resident of Long Beach was driving (on) southbound Redondo Avenue in the No. 1 lane, when a bicyclist rode his bicycle eastbound across the southbound lanes of Redondo Avenue, stopping in the southbound No. 1 lane of travel,” according to a police statement.
“The female driver did not see the bicyclist and struck him, causing the bicyclist to land in the No. 1 northbound lane of Redondo Avenue, where he was stuck by a second vehicle being driven by a male resident of Long Beach,” police said.
The motorists cooperated with investigators. Their names were not released.
