A bicyclist suffered major head and internal injuries in a collision with an SUV Tuesday in Cathedral City.
The man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, said Cathedral City Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Paul Herrera.
Police received a call at about 7:40 a.m. that a bicyclist had been struck at the intersection of Allen Avenue and Palm Canyon Drive while traveling northbound by a Jeep SUV traveling eastbound between 35 and 40 mph, Herrera said.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing due to conflicting reports by witnesses regarding whether the bicyclist or driver were at fault, Herrera said.
“Some say there was a green light for the driver,” Herrera said. “Some say there was a red light.”
Herrera said “strong sun was facing eastbound drivers” when the crash occurred, but said it was unclear if the sun was a contributing factor. The driver of the Jeep stopped following the collision and was cooperative with police, Herrera said.
Police say alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor in the crash.
