A 61-year-old woman was killed in Huntington Beach when an SUV driven by an alleged drunk driver crashed head-on into the car in which she was a back seat passenger, authorities said Thursday.

It happened at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday on Gothard Street around Cedar Avenue, said Huntington Beach police Sgt. Eric Warken.

A 2013 Nissan Rogue driven by a 17-year-old boy from Westminster drove northbound in southbound lanes on Gothard Street and crashed head-on into a 2016 Kia Soul, causing major damage to both vehicles, Warken said.

The driver and front seat passenger in the Soul complained of pain but the Huntington Beach woman in the back seat suffered major internal injuries, he said. Paramedics took her to UCI Medical Center in Orange where she was pronounced dead.

The teenage driver suffered minor injuries but was determined to be under the influence of alcohol, Warken said.

The crash was under investigation, he said. Investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash and view video footage from the area.

Anyone with information was asked to call Accident Investigator D. Kim at 714-536-5666 or Investigator A. Turner at 714-536-5670.
