A suspect in a police pursuit was killed when he crashed his car into a concrete wall in Monterey Park, police said Monday.
Officers from the Monterey Park Police Department responded at 5:22 p.m. Sunday to a report of suspicious circumstances involving two men opening parked vehicles in the 700 block of Monterey Pass Road, police reported.
When officers arrived at the scene, the suspects fled in a gold Nissan and rammed a patrol vehicle while trying to exit the area. The vehicle fled at a high speed and officers lost sight of it, police reported.
Officers then saw a black Mercedes-Benz attempt to flee the scene, prompting the officers to pursue that vehicle instead. Police were able to detain the suspects in the vehicle after the driver lost control of the Mercedes-Benz, causing the car to spin out and strike the curb, according to police.
While officers were detaining the suspects in the Mercedes-Benz, they saw the Nissan overturned. The Nissan had struck a concrete wall, and the sole male occupant was partially ejected from it. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The suspect’s name will be released after authorities notify the next of kin, police said.
The suspects in the Mercedes-Benz have been identified as Diego Ramirez, 25, of Huntington Park and Wendy Mireles, 31, of Pico Rivera.
Ramirez is charged with felony evading, attempted grand theft, vandalism, and trespassing, police said. His bail is set at $75,000. Mireles is charged with attempted grand theft and her bail is set at $20,000, police said. Detectives have determined the suspects were attempting to steal catalytic converters from the parked vehicles, police reported.
