A routine traffic stop in Pomona led to the arrest of a 21-year-old passenger in a vehicle armed with a loaded handgun, police said Sunday.

Phoenix, Arizona resident Juan Michel was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm and a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, the Pomona Police Department reported.

Officers pulled over a vehicle Michel was in a little after 6:50 p.m. Saturday, when they noticed a car with dark window tint made an illegal U-turn in the area of the 2400 block of South Garey Avenue.

“Officers followed the car and witnessed a third violation when the driver of the car failed to signal while entering a freeway onramp,” according to a Pomona Police Department news statement.

Officers made a traffic stop and contacted the four occupants inside the car. Michel, who was a front seat passenger, told officers he had a loaded handgun in his front pocket.

He was removed from the vehicle and the handgun was located on him. Michel was cooperative with officers and was arrested without further incident.
