A carjacking suspect led Palm Springs police on a high-speed surface street and freeway chase Friday that ended when he entered Interstate 10 going in the wrong direction and collided head-on with another vehicle, authorities said.
Richard Hamilton, 34, of Palm Springs was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries following the 3:20 p.m. crash on I-10, the Palm Springs Police Department reported.
According to police, officers attempted to pull the suspect over for driving erratically, but he sped off and led them on a pursuit northbound on Indian Canyon Drive toward I-10, striking a vehicle while en route to the interstate.
The occupants of that vehicle were not injured.
Hamilton then allegedly drove onto the eastbound 1-10 going the wrong direction and collided with another vehicle, whose occupants also escaped injury. He was hurt in the second crash and was arrested at the scene, according to police.
The carjacking victim also suffered minor injuries, but did not require hospitalization, police said.
