A 22-year-old suspect in a deadly 2018 Anaheim park shooting was taken into custody in Riverside by an Anaheim police SWAT team, according to authorities and media reports.
Fabian Santiago Mascareno was arrested around 3 a.m. Friday at a Riverside home, police said.
Mascareno surrendered without incident and was being held in Orange County Jail without bail, according to jail records. He is scheduled to head to court Monday.
Police said Mascareno and 24-year-old Hipolito Sanchez allegedly shot at four men, killing one and wounding another in Chaparral Park, 1770 West Broadway, on Oct. 25, 2018.
The fatal victim was identified as Merfy Rivera, according to police and the Orange County Register.
Police do not know the motive behind the shooting but believe it was gang-related.
“There was some sort of confrontation,” Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer told the newspaper. “I believe (the suspects’) gang operates in that area around the park.”
Sanchez was arrested a couple of days after the shooting and booked for murder, police said. He was being held without bail and has yet to be tried, the newspaper reported.
Anaheim police would not disclose how they located Mascareno.
“He’s always been a known suspect,” Carringer told the Register. “He was doing everything in his power to elude capture.”
