Two people were arrested in El Segundo last night for identity and car theft, police said Sunday.

A male driver and a female passenger were pulled over after an officer ran the license plate of a 1996 Honda Civic, near Vista Del Mar and Grand Avenue, at 6:45 p.m., and found it matched with a vehicle reported stolen, according to Jeff Humphrey, with the El Segundo Police Department.

The pair complied with officer direction, stopping near Binder Place and Whiting Street, while police waited for additional units to arrive.

At the time, police didn’t have any specific reason to believe the suspects were armed, but they wanted to proceed with caution anyway, Humphrey said.

The suspects were taken into custody at 7:35 p.m.

They had other people’s identification information as well as burglary tools in their possession, Humphrey said.

It was unclear whether the suspects were residents of the area or not.
