A Hemet police pursuit to stop the driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle Friday ended with a patrolman shooting at the suspect, who was not hit and was arrested without further incident.

Hemet police Officer Cheyne Nicot said that about 3:30 a.m., a patrol unit spotted a car in the 1700 block of San Andres Drive that had been reported stolen in another location. The officers signaled the driver to pull over, but he accelerated instead, triggering a chase, according to Nicot.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, “traveled throughout the city,” with officers close on his tail for about a half-hour, the officer said.

“At the termination of the pursuit, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Nicot said.

The suspect was not struck by the patrolman’s gunfire, but he was still taken to a hospital for a precautionary evaluation, according to the lawman.

No officers were injured.

The police department’s detective bureau is overseeing the OIS investigation.
