Following an hours-long standoff, a 27-year-old man accused of shooting at a neighbor’s home in Riverside was arrested and remained jailed Saturday in lieu of $750,000 bail.

A resident called police on Thursday to report what was initially believed to be vandalism done to the caller’s home windows in the Orangecrest neighborhood, according to the Riverside City Police Department.

Detectives later determined that the windows were broken by gunshots and that the suspected gunman was a neighbor who was suffering from mental illness, police said.

Authorities served a search warrant at about 6 p.m. at the suspect’s home in the 19000 block of Nassau Street, but the man barricaded himself and refused to come out, according to Officer Ryan Railsback.

“For several hours, de-escalation and negotiation tactics were utilized to encourage the suspect to come out. He continued to ignore all communications until about 11 p.m. when he finally surrendered peacefully to officers,” Railsback said.

When officers searched the home, they allegedly found a loaded firearm that investigators believe was used to shoot at the neighbor’s home.

James Kahng, 27, of Riverside was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of shooting at an inhabited building and stalking. Detectives sought a bail enhancement, which was approved, setting Kahng’s bail at $750,000.
