A 13-year-old girl died and her 8-year-old brother suffered serious injuries Sunday in a carjacking in Pico Rivera.
The vehicle was taken from the 9000 block of Whittier Boulevard, near Lindsay Avenue, about 2 p.m., said Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez.
The girl died at the scene, Navarro-Suarez said.
CBS2 identified her as Isabella Cortes.
Cortes and three siblings — 8-year-old brother, 11-year-old brother and 18-year-old sister — were waiting in a parked van outside a restaurant while their parents went in, according to Channel 2.
According to the station, 27-year-old Jose Aguilar got into the van and the older two siblings got out. He is alleged to have then sped off, but crashed and was stopped by the driver of another vehicle he had previously tried to carjack, along with passersby.
A video photographer told City News Service that both children were ejected from the vehicle, but LASD did not immediately confirm the report.
Further details were not immediately released.
Anyone with information about the carjacking was asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
