An officer discharged a firearm Monday afternoon in South Los Angeles, but no one was struck by gunfire.

The shooting occurred at 5:40 p.m. in the 300 block of East 99th Street, near Towne Avenue, in the Green Meadows area, according to Officers Mike Lopez and Rosario Cervantes of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers responded to a call of a possibly armed group in the area, and when officers arrived, the group ran between two buildings, the LAPD reported.

Another patrol unit was in the area that the group ran toward, and an officer discharged a firearm, according to the LAPD, which did not provide any information about why an officer fired the gun.

No one was struck by gunfire and no officers were injured, the LAPD reported.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.
