A 21-year-old man accused of firing a handgun inside and outside a Calimesa home where his child was present pleaded not guilty Thursday to discharging a firearm recklessly and other offenses.
Michael Donovan Mariscal of Banning was arrested Sunday following an investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Along with the gunfire count, Mariscal is charged with child endangerment and committing a felony offense while on bail.
He was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Timothy Hollenhorst, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Sept. 22 at the Banning Justice Center.
The defendant is being held on $1 million bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Judes, about 9 p.m. Saturday, Mariscal became enraged for unknown reasons and opened fire inside a residence in the 35000 block of Mesa Grande, near Calimesa Boulevard.
Judes alleged that as he was leaving the property, he turned and fired at the exterior of the home. No one was injured.
“Michael left the area with his young child prior to deputies arriving,” Judes said.
He said that in the ensuing investigation, detectives confirmed Mariscal was the alleged shooter and that he was on bond after being charged in connection with an attempted murder from November 2018.
Sunday morning, deputies tracked Mariscal to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Westward Boulevard, where a search warrant was served and he was taken into custody without incident, according to Judes.
“Evidence linking him to the crime was located,” he said.
No details were available regarding the alleged attempted murder with which Mariscal is charged, along with another man. Mariscal posted a $200,000 bond in May, allowing him to go free.
Court records show no prior felony or misdemeanor convictions.
