A multi-vehicle crash on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Costa Mesa sent two people to the hospital and prompted the closure Thursday morning of three lanes of the freeway.

The accident occurred near Harbor Boulevard about 5:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and assessed eight victims, two of whom were taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

The carpool and Nos. 1 and 2 southbound lanes near Harbor Boulevard were closed until further notice.

Details of what led up to the crash were not immediately available.
