A man suspected of driving while intoxicated was shot by deputies after he allegedly backed into a deputy with his car at the end of a pursuit, sheriff’s officials said Saturday.
The pursuit began at about 8:40 p.m. Friday when deputies attempted to pull over a suspected DUI driver near Lark Haven Drive and Goldfinch Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver did not stop and deputies chased him for less than a mile to the closed entrance of an apartment complex near Heacock Street and Cottonwood Avenue, according to Sgt. Lionel Murphy.
“As deputies exited their patrol unit, the driver reversed and struck one of the deputies. It was at that time that a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” Murphy said.
The driver, Quintin Howard, 26, was shot and taken to a hospital, along with a deputy.
A passenger in the vehicle was detained and taken to the Moreno Valley sheriff’s station for questioning, Murphy said.
According to the sheriff’s department, once Howard is discharged from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, false imprisonment and felony evading.
The deputies involved in the shooting were not named and were placed on administrative leave per the sheriff’s department’s policy.
